Applying for vocational upper secondary qualifications
Prospective students can apply to Ekami whenever suitable and start their studies flexibly throughout the year. National joint application is organised each spring for those who have completed basic education and who do not have a secondary qualification. Studying in the vocational colleges in Finland is free of charge.
We will arrange Finnish language tests for the applicants whose mother tongue is not Finnish. The applicant needs to pass the test successfully to be admitted.
In addition, some qualifications require an entrance examination and/or an interview arranged by the college.
In Finland, vocational education is mainly free of charge.
Based on national legislation, tuition fees will be introduced from 1 August 2026 for some students coming from outside the EU and EEA.
Tuition fees mainly apply to students who:
- are citizens of a country outside the EU and EEA
- start their studies on or after 1 August 2026
- resident in Finland with a residence permit granted for the purpose of studies.
Tuition fees do not apply to all applicants. Whether a tuition fee is required depends, for example, on the applicant’s nationality, the basis of the residence permit and whether the student is subject to compulsory education.
Institution-specific practices, the amount of tuition fees and detailed payment conditions are still under preparation.

We also have TUVA – preparatory education for vocational training, integration training for migrants, qualification and further education, as well as labour market training. In addition, we organize National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI) tests.
